Design Technology Keystage 3

In key stage 3 students will cover Food Preparation and Nutrition, Textiles and Product Design.

In Food students cook a variety of products to build up their confidence and skill level in the preparation of food.

The products involve students developing their chopping skills, heat control, testing if the product is cooked and how to handle ingredients e.g. rubbing in and whisking, to give the products their desired outcome. Alongside developing practical skills students will investigate nutrition, healthy eating, how to adapt recipes, choosing the correct ingredients considering ethical and environmental issues and how ingredients work.

In Textiles, students learn a variety of skills and techniques in order build on both practical knowledge and theory around the subject. Students make exciting products, accessible to all, considering different briefs and target markets. Introduction to specialist machinery, equipment, materials and modern technology ensures that students progress safely and creatively.  The inclusion of technology helps to promote the necessity of Textiles work in industry.

In Product Design students learn a variety of skills including both practical and theoretical knowledge. Students are encouraged to use their creativity in order to produce their own outcomes using the design process as well as a variety of techniques. Some of which include; Technical drawing, sketching, rendering, foam and card modelling, CAD modelling and the use of Photoshop and 2D design to generate Both visual and physical outcomes. Students will also be exposed to manufacturing techniques such as vacuum forming and laser cutting as well as developing their own hand skills.
